AMIA Applauds Appointment of Dr. Robert Kolodner as Interim National Coordinator for Health Information Technology

U.S. Newswire
September 21, 2006

Bethesda, MD -- The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and its board of directors congratulate Robert Kolodner, MD, on his appointment as the Interim National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Kolodner is a long-standing and prominent member of AMIA. He replaces Dr. David Brailer, the nation's first coordinator of healthcare IT, who resigned in May.

During his tenure as chief health informatics officer at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Kolodner made major contributions to health information technology in both government and the private sector. He has actively guided the VA activities in the establishment of a life-long, comprehensive, computerized clinical record for the nations' veterans, as well as strengthening the working relationship between VA and the Department of Defense.

"As the informatics leader for the nation's largest integrated health system and a strong and effective champion for transforming healthcare through the use of IT, Dr. Kolodner is an ideal choice for this position," said Don E. Detmer, MD, MA, AMIA president and CEO.

"AMIA is eager to work with Dr. Kolodner as he leads the national effort to achieve the president's goal of widespread adoption of electronic health records and personal health records by 2014," adds Paul C. Tang, MD, AMIA chairman.
