Society for Imaging Informatics
April 15, 2008

Leesburg, VA -- Practice meets theory at the SIIM 2008 Annual Meeting, May 15-18, 2008, in Seattle, hosted by the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM). The SIIM meeting has always provided a collegial environment for practical education and demonstration combined with the latest research and science in imaging informatics. This year, the meeting will add student scientific travel awards and incorporate hands-on learning labs that will give attendees the chance to get up-close-and-personal with some of the latest technologies and research.

Ride to SIIM - High Plains Driftin'...

In support of its expanded research grant program, SIIM is accepting pledges for the "Third Annual Ride to SIIM." This exciting and fun cross-country motorcycle trek from Chicago to the SIIM Annual Meeting, organized by David Channin, MD, will raise money for the SIIM Research Grant Fund.

With an estimated round-trip from Chicago at over 4,000 miles, a 1-penny-per-mile pledge will translate into a $40 tax deductible donation to SIIM. Send pledges by email to SIIM at grants@siimweb.org along with complete contact information. Contributions to the SIIM Grant Program, a 501c(3) organization, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law.

The theme of the ride is "High Plains Driftin' for a Fistful of Dollars." Interested riders and those who want to learn more about the SIIM Research Grant program may visit www.siimweb.org/grants. The 2007 SIIM grant recipients will be presenting their SIIM grant research findings at the 8th Annual SIIM Research & Development Symposium on Thursday, May 15th.

Closing General Session

Plan to attend what should be a unique, interesting, exciting, and thought-provoking Closing Session at SIIM 2008 and contest. Drs. Eliot Siegel and Khan Siddiqui have convened a panel of experts including corporate and imaging informatics luminaries to tackle your most topical, controversial, and compelling questions about PACS and imaging informatics.

Submit Your Questions for the Closing Session and Win a Really Awesome Gadget courtesy of SIIM! Email questions to SIIM2008@siimweb.org. Prizes such as the iPOD touch, Amazon Kindle, IBM ThinkPad, and Garmin nuvi GPS System will be awarded to the most interesting and provocative questions selected for use during the session. (Must be present to win.)

From its inception, SIIM has a history of facilitating productive, open, and forward-thinking interactions between users and the industry, and we are looking forward to creating this atmosphere and interaction again to close out SIIM 2008!

Live Workflow Demonstration

Come see "today's hell" as Katherine Andriole, PhD; Paul Chang, MD; and Luciano Prevedello, MD, demonstrate current pain points in the imaging chain from exam protocolling, image acquisition, transmission, management, display, interpretation, review, and reporting. The session will spotlight the radiologist in the reading room, the technologist at the CT scanner, the image processor in the 3D lab, and the surgeon in the operating room.

Building Bridges

The SIIM Annual Meeting program continues to bridge the gap between radiology and other clinical specialties that incorporate medical imaging. The program features several sessions that reflect an enterprise imaging focus, including a SIIM U session on enterprise integration strategies and a hot topic session drawing similarities and contrasts between image management issues inside and outside of radiology. The program also includes SIIM University, hot topic sessions, 10 scientific sessions and a poster and demonstration session, learning labs, "in the crossfire" debates, CIIP study groups, and an open source plug fest.

The highly rated and popular IIP Symposium will be presented on the pre-conference day, May 14th. The course has been prepared around the 10 domains of the ABII certification test content outline and designed to address the range of competencies and skills required of IIPs.

Exhibiting companies at the SIIM Annual Meeting also continue to represent a broad spectrum of products and services and the latest trends in imaging informatics. Many exhibiting companies will feature new workflow management and connectivity solutions for enterprise interoperability, multiple PACS, and PACS archive migration control.

Registrations are strong one month out from the meeting. SIIM expects a total attendance of approximately 3,000 and a sold-out Exhibit Hall at the 2008 Annual Meeting.

SIIM officials and speakers will be available at a press conference at 12:00 noon on Thursday to address the meeting theme of "Building Bridges" among medical specialties and between users and vendors. Recipients of the 2008 SIIM Resident Scholarships will also be announced at the press conference.
