Malvern, PA -- Recognizing the need to educate nurses about how the use of informatics can assist in delivering quality care, Siemens Medical Solutions (www.usa.siemens.com/healthcareit) will serve as lead sponsor of the Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics (SINI) 2007, presented by the University of Maryland School of Nursing, July 18-21 in Baltimore.

"With the recent demand for electronic health record systems and other technologies designed to help in the delivery of evidence-based care, it is critical for the nursing community to acquire the knowledge necessary to implement and utilize information technology effectively," said Rosemary Kennedy, M.B.A., R.N., chief nursing informatics officer, Health Services, Siemens Medical Solutions Healthcare IT division. "SINI provides great exposure to emerging technologies and participation in the annual conference has significantly grown throughout the past several years. Siemens is proud to join other industry leaders and many of our customers in supporting SINI's efforts and commitment to the advancement of healthcare."

Additionally, Kennedy and Susan Matney, M.S., R.N.C., clinical informatics, Health Services, Siemens Medical Solutions Healthcare IT division, will be playing active roles in some of the workshops and concurrent sessions that will take place during the 17th annual conference. First, Kennedy and Matney will serve as co-instructors with four other industry thought-leaders during a pre-conference workshop:
  • Methods for Successful Terminology Integration to Advance Evidence-based Practice, July 16th - July 17th (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and July 18th (8 a.m. - Noon). The workshop will provide participants with the essential strategies and tools for advancing the evidence-based nursing practice through the integration of structured terminologies and content within the electronic health record.

Matney will also be serving as a co-presenter for one of the SINI 2007 concurrent sessions:

  • Understanding Health Level-7 (HL7): Messaging with SNOMED and Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC), July 19th (1 p.m. - 2 p.m.). The session will help participants better understand HL7 through a brief historical overview and a full description of the format of 2.x and 3 HL7 messages. Examples of messages using SNOMED and LOINC will be given.

Siemens customers will also be participating in the conference through poster presentations on July 20th, 10:45 a.m.—11:45 a.m.:

  • Successful Implementation-What Is Needed and How to Measure It When You Are Done. Presentation to be given by Denise Tyler, R.N., B.C., M.S.N./M.B.A., clinical specialist, information systems, Kaweah Delta Health Care District.
  • An Information Technology Infrastructure to Enable Evidence-Based Nursing Practice. Presentation to be given by Joan Insalaco Warren, Ph.D., R.N., B.C. director of professional practice and research, and Joan Pochciol, M.S., M.B.A., health service librarian, Franklin Square Hospital Center.
  • Wading Through the Data...Using Standardization to Effect Outcomes. Presentation to be given by Ruthann Johnson R.N., M.S.N., information systems clinical liaison, and Michele Wargo R.N., B.S.N., director of nursing systems, Lourdes Health System; and Lisa McChesney R.N., M.S.N., C.C.R.N., director of nursing and clinical systems, Hamot Medical Center.

In addition to its sponsorship and executive thought leadership contributions, Siemens will be exhibiting Soarian(R), its healthcare process management system that enables organizations to design, streamline, track and deliver standardized processes, resulting in fewer handoffs, more measurable, predictable outcomes, and improved workflow throughout the healthcare enterprise. Siemens clinical information systems, including Soarian, deliver plans of care, which help in the production of outcome variables that are essential to nurses. This data not only helps nurses to provide more effective care, but also assists hospitals and healthcare systems in meeting their organizations' patient safety and quality care goals.
